Paris Hilton Loses Out: Fortune Pledged to Charity

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Hotel heiress Paris Hilton’s potential inheritance dramatically diminished after her grandfather Barron Hilton announced plans on Wednesday to donate 97 percent of his $2.3 billion fortune to charity.

That wealth includes $1.2 billion Barron Hilton stands to earn from both the recent sale of Hilton Hotels Corp. — started by his father Conrad in 1919 when he bought a small hotel in Cisco, Texas — and pending sale of the world’s biggest casino company, Harrah’s Entertainment Inc.

That money will be placed in a charitable trust that will eventually benefit the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, raising its total value to about $4.5 billion, the foundation said in a statement.

Barron Hilton, chairman of the foundation, intends “to contribute 97 percent of his entire net worth, estimated today at $2.3 billion, including the created trusts, at whatever value it is at the time of his passing,” the foundation said. Paris Hilton was not immediately available for comment on her grandfather’s plans for his fortune.

Jerry Oppenheimer, who profiled the Hilton family in his 2006 book “House of Hilton,” has said Barron Hilton is embarrassed by the behavior of his socialite granddaughter Paris and believes it has sullied the family name. Barron Hilton, who is 80, has not commented on Oppenheimer’s remarks.

The foundation supports projects that provide clean water in Africa, education for blind children, and housing for the mentally ill. Its aims, based on Conrad Hilton’s will, are “to relieve the suffering, the distressed and the destitute.”

“Speaking for the family as well as the foundation, we are all exceedingly proud and grateful for this extraordinary commitment,” said Steven Hilton, one of Barron’s sons and president and chief executive of the foundation.

Conrad Hilton established the foundation in 1944 and when he died in 1979 left virtually all of his fortune — including, according to media reports at the time, a 27 percent controlling stake in Hilton Hotels — to the charity.

But Barron Hilton challenged the will and after a nearly decade-long legal struggle reached an out-of-court settlement to split ownership of the shares with the foundation in 1988, The New York Times reported.

The hotel group was sold for $20 billion in October to private equity firm Blackstone Group, while the acquisition of Harrah’s — of which Barron Hilton was a board member until 2006 — is due to be completed by Apollo Management and TPG Capital in early 2008.

Paris, a symbol of celebrity privilege in America, gained notoriety in 2003 when a home video of her having sex with a boyfriend was posted on the Internet.

She parlayed her notoriety, fueled by tabloid headlines about her partying lifestyle, into a celebrity career that has included a reality television show, a book, a music album, and film roles. Then this year she spent more than three weeks in jail for violating probation in a drunk-driving case.

 Katherine Heigl

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Katherine Heigl, an Emmy-winning star of medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” married her musician boyfriend in Utah on Sunday, US Weekly magazine reported on its Web site.

Katherine Heigl, 29, and Josh Kelley, 27, tied the knot under a marquee at a resort in Park City, Utah. Among the guests at the black-tie ceremony were Heigl’s co-stars Sandra Oh, Kate Walsh and T.R. Knight, the magazine said.

Heigl won an Emmy in September for her role as an adulterous medic in the ABC network’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” which follows the lives and loves of physicians at a Seattle hospital. She met Kelley in 2005, when she was cast in a music video, and they were engaged the following year after Heigl forced the issue. Kelley, a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter, is due to release a new album in February.

Heidi Klum Sued by Luxury Jeweler

Heidi Klum

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Luxury jeweler Van Cleef and Arpels sued German supermodel and television star Heidi Klum’s company on Friday, claiming she copied a vintage clover jewelry design.

The suit, filed in Manhattan federal court, seeks more than $25,000 in damages from Klum’s company Heidi Klum GmbH and Mouawad USA, another company she has designed jewelry for. It said both companies attempted to gain benefit from Van Cleef’s esteemed reputation by creating and selling a similar clover design from Van Cleef’s vintage Alhambra jewelry line. Van Cleef & Arpels Inc is owned by luxury goods group Richemont.

Klum is married to British singer Seal and has three children. She hosts the Bravo reality cable television show “Project Runway,” which features aspiring designers vying for a chance to get a start in the fashion world.

She gained fame in the late 1990s modeling lingerie for retailer Victoria’s Secret and swimsuits, most notably on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine’s popular swimsuit edition.

Amanda Peet – X Files Scares Up Cast

Mulder and Scully are about to get pimped out and then some.

Xzibit, the hit-making rapper and hilarious host of MTV’s Pimp My Ride, will join Amanda Peet and Scottish comedian Billy Connolly in key supporting roles for the upcoming X-Files movie.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Xzibit and Peet will play FBI agents working alongside David Duchovny’s Fox “Spooky” Mulder and Gillian Anderson’s Dana Scully in the second film based on Fox’s hugely popular sci-fi series.

No word on Connolly’s role. A rep for Fox declined to provide any information on the threesome’s characters, and details of the plot remain a closely guarded secret. What we do know is that unlike the first X-Files feature in 1998, the new film will avoid the series’ abstruse mythology and instead work as a standalone installment about some kind of supernatural mystery.

X-Files creator Chris Carter will direct the film from a script he wrote with series writer and executive producer Frank Spotnitz. Talk of another X-Files movie has been ongoing since the 1998 release grossed more than $189 million worldwide. But the project stalled as Carter and Fox engaged in lengthy litigation over residuals from the show’s syndication sales.

The two sides settled earlier this year, clearing the way for the new chapter. Aside from his seven-season sojourn on Pimp My Ride, Xzibit has guested in CSI: Miami and freestyled opposite Eminem in 8 Mile. More recent film roles include XXX: State of the Union with fellow emcee Ice Cube, Derailed with Clive Owen and Gridiron Gang with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Xzibit had been set to star opposite Bruce Willis and Woody Harrelson in Pinkville, Oliver Stone’s drama about the My Lai Massacre. But that picture was shelved due to the writers’ strike, allowing Xzibit to fit the X-Files sequel into his schedule.

Known for her roles in The Whole Nine Yards and NBC’s Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Amanda Peet currently stars opposite John Cusack in the New Line drama Martian Child. She also recently agreed to headline the drama Real Men Cry with Ethan Hawke and Mark Ruffalo. Connolly had a memorable turn as Uncle Morty in 2004’s Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. Other film credits include White Oleander, The Last Samurai and the voice of McSquizzy in last year’s Open Season.

The still-untitled X-Files film is due to begin shooting later this month in Vancouver and hits theaters July 25, 2008.

Jennifer Hewitt – No Love for Playboy

Jennifer Love Hewitt may love her body, but she’s not interested in educating the world about its finer qualities. The 28-year-old Ghost Whisperer star has passed on a request to pose for Playboy, her publicist confirmed to E! News Wednesday.

“Jennifer was offered Playboy, and she did turn it down,” rep Sarah Fuller said. It’s unclear whether the famous men’s mag wanted Hewitt to go the full monty or if she was tapped for a more modest photo shoot, but now the newly engaged actress has joined the ranks of Jessica Alba, Nelly Furtado, Ashlee Simpson, Christina Aguilera and Katherine Heigl, all of whom reportedly turned down big money to play Playmate.

(Alba actually ended up on the cover without permission, in a still from Into the Blue, and threatened to sue until Hugh Hefner made amends with a donation to her favorite charity.) Either way, Hef and his editorial board obviously approve of Hewitt’s feminine figure, which despite measuring in at a wee size 2 was recently the subject of much misplaced message-board ridicule in response to some unflattering paparazzi shots taken while she was beachside with fiancé Ross McCall in Hawaii.

The mean-spirited buzz that referred to her as less than a bathing beauty spurred Hewitt to speak out on behalf of curvy women everywhere. “Like all women out there should, I love my body,” the Hanes underwear model and People’s Choice Award nominee for Favorite Female TV star wrote on her blog earlier this month. “I know what I look like, and so do my friends and family.

“I’ve sat by in silence for a long time now about the way women’s bodies are constantly scrutinized. To set the record straight, I’m not upset for me, but for all the girls out there that are struggling with their body image. “A size 2 is not fat! Nor will it ever be. And being size 0 doesn’t make you beautiful…To all girls with butts, boobs, hips and a waist, put on a bikini—put it on and stay strong.”

Hewitt’s beau certainly seems happy with the whole package. McCall, 31, popped the question over the Thanksgiving holiday.
